I was expecting there to be people around but there was no one. As we began what would be the longest climb of the trip (a relentless 800′ gain) poor Frank started really feeling his heel – and pack.  I took about 5 lbs, and Derrin took about the same if not more, maybe closer to 10. Highs 58 to 63 at 5000 feet. We hit the trail by 10:15.  I could say nothing about this as i had six lbs of beer in my own pack. Emigrant Lake: 140 acres at 8827' elevation, about 15 miles from the trailhead.  “These are so heavy!”, Frank laughed. Relieved of a little weight, Frank was ready to move on to ever higher ground. This would act as a base camp from which Frank could relax and fish, and Darrin and I could day hike if we wanted.  As we sat on the shore of the lake we watched the clouds pass, either as we looked up at them or at their reflection in the lake. We started talk of making it back to town for some Russian River brew and pizza to celebrate our survival. I had ambitions of making it to Smith and Morris Lakes in the Trinity Alps atop the sawtooth mountains. I explained my idea about Smith and Morris lake and we agreed that it would be too much to do as Frank has only backpacked a couple of times in his life in the past – each one a learning experience in pack weight. Tentative d We emerged over the final boulders and sprawling out before us was an absolutely massive body of water.  Darrin was using the Lifestraw. We had been moving rather quickly at this point for about 4 miles.  “I sat in it for about five minutes and decided to process some water, then organize the kitchen, and clean off the rock our kitchen is on.”. Truth be told, during this spring and summer my pack has been ready to go on a three day trip at a moments notice. Has a fair population of rainbows 8 to 14 inches.  We were the only ones there and neither the trail nor use areas nor any other sign of man could be seen from where we sat. As Frank topped the last hill, I saw that he was using a walking stick – but using it more like a crutch. “Alright!” Darrin said cheering his pops on. We stood on that last mountain top, knowing that Piute Lake was very close and just below us hidden by the trees; we were greeted at this point by some beautiful views.  Other items, however, were more luxurious. The trail offers a multitude of breathers from climbing, and even we stopped running from mosquitoes long enough to enjoy the views at Camp Lake and a Marmot at Piute Lake.  In a last minute effort before returning to full time work this summer, I felt it necessary to squeeze in one more backpacking trip.  We weren’t ready to head back to camp yet; it was only four/ four and a half miles away and all downhill. When we arrived at 8pm his pack was still empty. I was up and out of my hammock by 8am sharp and boiling water for my coffee. Frank continued his conversation with himself; “But I can call them and reschedule.  The only noise was the water as it lightly lapped from time to time against it’s granite shore, and the birds as they sang their favorite songs. 3 days, 2 nights. Without hesitation i responded with a “Yes!”. “Your clients will be ok?” I asked in shock. Like Yosemite, it has towering granite mountains and spectacular alpine lakes. Forest Service.  It’s not pure silence i long for; just the silencing of the ever present ‘schedule’ we experience in our every day lives. Duration: 3 days 2 nights  But for backpacking, over packing will eliminate any joy you may have otherwise had as you moan each step down the trail out of discomfort. It’s this ‘silence’ of nature that intrigues me so. It was a perfect day for a day hike; the sun was out and sky blue.  Darrin and Frank also had fresh eggs and some other goodies.
