Topics of 3 Parallel Working Groups:
1. Energy Hub – Prof. Dr. Michael Manitz (UDE) & Prof. Dr. -Ing. Bernd Noche (UDE)
Logistics, from the point of view of Supply Chain Management, considers the optimized flow of goods. It is no secret that this process can only be managed having valid and current information. However more means have to be considered such as:
– Flow of financial means
– Provision of energy
– Governance obligations
– Safety and security
Some of these means are at the same time Supply Chain Management and Infrastructure. The energy provision has to consider both aspects. On the one hand we see products such as oil, gas, waste and others providing different products related to energy. On the other hand we have to provide electricity in networks, we need pipelines and tanks, windmills and photovoltaic equipment.
Infrastructure projects are having a long-term impact on our environment and cannot be designed considering only the current demand. They have to consider e.g. future developments and needs, trends and technologies. Electro-mobility needs availability of electricity nearly everywhere at any time. Atomic waste needs a concept for long-term storing.
We need criteria for a decision making which energy is needed, where to place the installations, how to develop a sustainable pricing and at the same time not destroying our environment.
An access for answering these tasks can be found by considering different types of demand and energy and ways of providing supply.
-Is it possible to find general patterns which help us to make decisions?
-Which methods and models do we need?
-Which industry needs which energy and should we reject some industries because of their energy hunger (such as aluminium industry)?
-Do we have a global or a regional or a local problem?
-Should we develop centralized or decentralized systems?
-Which questions have to be decided by our society?
-Should we favor some types of energy?
-Which risks and stresses are acceptable?
The goal of the workshop group could be development of a green paper which structures the problem of energy supply and tries to define guidelines for answering the mentioned questions.
2. Urban Hub – Prof. Dr. Metin Türkay (Koç University)
Urban Hub brings together multiple activities in a comprehensive manner for supporting the economic, residential, social, cultural, recreational, educational and health related needs of citizens in urban setting. Bringing together all of these diverse functions needs innovative spatial design, effective planning and efficient support from transportation and logistics. This topic aims to discuss the design, planning and operational requirements and approaches that are essential in realization of Urban Hubs. Successful examples of this idea will also be examined in detail.
3. Digital / Service Hub – Prof. Dr. Thomas Hanke (FOM)
The working group Digital/ Service Hub will focus on the improvement of information gathering, processing and sharing to enable services and solutions to improve efficiency within an intermodal door-to-door transport chain, and significantly reduce negative environmental impacts of the logistics chain. The internet and in particular the “Internet of Things” is expected to change the way the world does business. The working group will further develop and leverage these technologies to enable connection of smart objects in the logistics sector. Among others, the working group will therefore also consider technological enablers, services, solutions and decision support systems to tackle opportunities for decarbonisation of the door-to-door logistics chain, such as dynamic traffic management, interconnection capabilities among hubs and network stakeholders, or cross-organization information sharing while preserving privacy and fair competition.
